Declaration
film director
“I decided to make this short film to find something physical in which to encapsulate my trauma to contain the loss of a part of my identity that someone, out of anger, chose to take from me. A part I’m not sure I’ll ever fully recover: my sexual orientation. For me, abuse between women was something rare, almost unthinkable and a deeply taboo topic. We’re often taught to see ourselves as united in sorority, always protecting each other from something greater: the abusive, patriarchal system. But this time, that wasn’t the case. This time, someone from within our own “side” committed the very act we’re usually protecting each other from. This is my way of making my story visible by telling what happened to me and creating space for others to see themselves reflected. It’s also a step forward in healing the trauma, and in reconnecting with something that was deeply mine and was taken away: the ability to relate to another woman in a sexual and emotional way.”
