The widower Matt Calder (Robert Mitchum) works a few acres of land reclaimed from the Indians and lives for his son Mark, who nevertheless considers him a coward because of a controversial episode in his past. After rescuing the adventurer Harry (Rory Calhoun) and his lover Kay (Marilyn Monroe), a saloon singer, from the raging waters, Matt is forced to flee from the Indians with his son and Kay, having been deprived of his rifle, stolen by Harry. The two men eventually meet again in town, where they confront each other in front of Mark, who is willing to do anything to save his father. A Western shot in dazzling, richly colored CinemaScope, the film was regarded as a minor work by both its director and Monroe (who sings One Silver Dollar to an audience of miners).

Otto Preminger
(Wiznitz, Ukraine, 1905 - New York City, NY, USA, 1986) initially worked in theatre and directed his first feature film, The Great Love, in 1931. In 1935, Joseph Stack, the owner of Twentieth Century Fox, invited him to move to the United States. Preminger shot his first Hollywood film, Under Your Spell (1938), while he was also working as an actor for cinema and on Broadway. In 1940 he directed Laura, considered by many his masterpiece, and established himself, thanks to his next movies as well, as one of the maestros of noir. During the 1950s and ’60s, he directed some of the most famous American movies of the era – Angel Face (1952); The Moon Is Blue (1953); Carmen Jones (1954), which won prizes at Berlin and Locarno; The Man with the Golden Arm (1955); Bonjour tristesse (1957); Anatomy of a Murder (1959); Exodus (1960) – and also worked as an actor for friends and colleagues, for example for Billy Wilder in Stalag 17 (1953).
