VILLENEUVE: THE RISE OF A LEGEND
by Yan Lanouette Turgeon
Born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, the son of a piano tuner, Gilles Villeneuve grew up in a family of humble origins, but from a young age he displayed an unstoppable passion for speed. After getting his start in snowmobile racing, he turned his attention to auto racing. Married to Joann and the father of two children, he never gave up on his dream of becoming a professional driver, challenging a world dominated by the elite. In 1977, he made his Formula 1 debut at the British Grand Prix, catching the attention of Enzo Ferrari, who offered him the opportunity of a lifetime. Behind the wheel of the Scuderia Ferrari, Villeneuve became a legend, one destined to outlive his tragic death in 1982 at the Zolder circuit in Belgium.
