Dusty Hearts is a black comedy about one man's destiny. Sax Elthan is a hapless musician, a refugee from the inner city. Rejected by his girlfriend, he travels to the outback to look for work. One burning Wednesday he finds himself beside a highway waiting for a lift, contemplating his future. It arrives in the shape of a beatup Volkswagen with a wardrobe tied to the roof. The car swerves to miss him and the wardrobe falls off; its door opens to reveal a woman. Although Sax is unaware of it, this event is the turning point in his life. A few hours later at a roadhouse, an argument over an egg roll will seal his fate forever Sax will then be launched on his new life in a small travelling show. There Sax finds love, a sense of belonging, and a growing fan club.

"Black asphalt.
Red dust.
Blue sky.
This is the setting for Dusty Hearts. My visual approach to Dusty Hearts has been inspired by the early desert landscapes of painter Jeffrey Smart. His work has a dreamlike surreal quality which emphasizes the effects of time and climate on the landscape and on architecture." (Pauline Chan)
