GEORGY GIRL
by Silvio Narizzano
At 22, and still a virgin, Georgy believing herself to be unattractive to the opposite sex, suffers from an oversized selfrejection complex. Her parents, Ted and Doris, are employed by James Leamington, a wealthy man, who, although married, is childless. He has always looked upon Georgy as a daughter but now, not quite 50, his feelings are beginning to change and he asks her to become his mistress. Georgy is able to postpone giving him a straight answer to his unsolicited proposition when she discovers that her flatmate, Meredith, violinist, is pregnant, and that she intends to marry her latest lover charming but fickle young man, Jos. While James, the persevering benefactor waits for an answer Meredith's brazen egotism becomes obvious even to the selfish Jos, who realises he is falling in love with Georgy just as much as she is falling in love with him. Finally they become lovers, only to discover that Meredith has been taken to hospital in labour. When the baby arrives, Jos and Meredith want the child to be adopted, but Georgy, horrified at their callousness, decides to become the "de facto" mother. While Meredith leaves the hospital looking for new conquests, Georgy is torn between her passion for Jos, her motherlove for the baby and James's love for her. Fully realizing the unsatisfactory state of her life, Georgy decides that her ultimate happiness will lie in marrying James, who will provide love and security for both herself and the child.
"Another swinging London story filled with people running through London late at night, dancing madly in the rain, and visiting deserted children's playgrounds to ride on the roundabouts. In style a poor imitation of various 'new wave' exercises, it has a slick line in repartee which amuses at first until its shallowness becomes apparent. The continual jokes about Georgy's size, for example, tend to pall after numerous repetitions." ("Monthly Film Bulletin", n. 395, December 1966)
