Sixthformer Jamie McGregor is oppressed by his virginity and worried that his schoolfriend Spike and even his younger brother Joe are more experienced than he is. But he has an active fantasy life that principally involves Mary a beautiful and seemingly unattainable blonde. His first attempt to move from fantasy to practice is with a mindless but well developed girl called Linda. He gets taken up by Paula, a churchgoer; then by Caroline, who invites him to spend a weekend in her parents' luxurious home. Jamie is about to seduce Caroline when she passes out drunk on the bed. Finally, at a party, he manages to make love to Audrey, whom he then leaves to walk home with Mary. She agrees to go away with him for a weekend, but Jamie is soon disgusted by her coldblooded promiscuity and decides to concentrate on his studies instead of girls. Mary fails her examination, Jamie and Spike both get places at University, and Jamie is excited to learn that Mary's pretty and demure friend Claire will be at University with him.

Declaration

film director

"For teenagers and about teenagers, the only incongruity about Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush is that is should have been made by adults, so totally does it enter into the teenager's view of himself. This is not to imply that it can be enjoyed for its psychological accuracy since what Donner captures is not adolescents as they are, but as they are encouraged by advertising to believe themselves to be: extroverted, glamorous young swingers whose artificial world has its counterpart here in the psychedelic credits (yes, again), pop song accompaniment, camp fantasies and coloured filters, in the slightly démodé trendiness of Donner's style."
