Country: Italy
Year: 1991
Duration: 110'

The sweet, fragile, twentyyearsold Emanuela roams over city and country making sidewalk paintings. Rudy is fortyfive. He makes his living playing the accordion in the fairs and dance halls of marginal neighborhoods. The two meet by chance and fall in love without future plans. Their relationship changes bit by bit into a slow emotional agony. It is broken off when the girl decides to leave the man to save herself. Emanuela's mother was a romantic and disillusioned woman who ran after her dream of an eternal love until the very end. Her suicide pushes her daughter on a sorrowful journey of discovery that puts light on a terrible truth.

"For me cinema is poetry. It is the possibility of making the splinters of life come out of every day reality. These scattered pieces of a discourse give body to my way of being and existing in the world. More than any other artistic expression, cinema has this ability to reveal and unveil that which is real. ... The defeated are almost always the protagonists of my works: Vittorio in Pericoloso a sé e agli altri, Giovanni in I pugni in cielo, Samira the Nigerian prostitute, and Rudy in Coming Upon the Days. This is a choice that does not only come out of a felling of human solidarity. Above all, his choice comes out of the knowledge that that vein of poetry that renders even the most tragic and desperate realities artistically evocative and existentially exemplary gushes forth with more immediacy from that very universe of 'lost lives'."
