No war teatro di guerra
by Vincenzo Bergamente, Gaetano Gravina
«The war is over. Everybody or almost everybody, with a shaky and embarrassing air, has gone back to accepting his or her responsibility in the old and new battle fines and speech lines, be they emotional, political, or social. Now there are the ruins, the leftovers, the dross, the theater of war: i.e., all that we have seen. And all that we see is no surprise to us at all. 'And my Trojans believed what they saw, not what they knew'. These words of Christa Wolf anticipate a nonvisible theatrality of memory's 'ruins'. There is a memory that the common folks have together which has been fixed in the fragments from one of the most representatively ironic and genial figures in our universal film history. Totò's every unspoken word, every look, and every gag was and is a punch in the stomach, a violent attack on the rhetorical tyranny of a respectability which could not help but be eaten away by the acid of irony. We hope in a try at a smile, the promoter of peace, far from the memory of those ruins which we have not yet seen." (Vincenzo Bergamene and Gaetano Gravina)
