Paul Gregory and Vic Sloane rob a rich American visiting London of a precious antique coin collection. After the collection is sold and the loot is divided, Gregory leaves his money in a safe deposit box and allows himself be arrested by the police. He is condemned to ten years in prison, and not the five years he foresaw. He escapes prison aided by Vic who hides him in an apartment. When he goes to the bank to get his money, he catches a glimpse of inspector Scott without realizing that he was investigating another case. He goes away with empty hands. But is old companion blackmails him, threatening to turn him, in if he does not give him the key to the safe deposit box. After setting several traps, Gregory manages to get the key back and abandons Vic bound and gagged. He seeks refuge among other members of the underworld, but they all abandon him when the news spreads that Vic has died of suffocation and for that reason Gregory is wanted for homicide. He discovers that not even the key that Vic gave him is the right one and then accepts a proposal of help from Bridget, a young woman from good society who he has met by chance. This brings him to her parents' house in Wales. When he sees her talking with inspector Scott and so wrongly believes that she had betrayed him, he flees and is killed by a farmer.

"For those days it was fairly obliquely told. In fact, I think it's very simple for an audience but perhaps not quite so simple for the critics. I was determined that if we had a criminal as a central figure then we would not have this element of self pity that was so prevalent in those days. There was a whole passage in the book where Greg's criminality was explained away by the fact that he was a paratrooper or a commando, and had been taught his violence that way. We made no reference to that at all. He is what he is and you either accept him or you don't." (Seth Holt interviewed by Kevin GoughYates, "Screen", n. 6, NovemberDecember 1969, p. 7)
