ON MY OWN
Country: Italy, Canada, Australia
Year: 1991
Duration: 91'

While he is riding in a train from his boarding school in Toronto for his Christmas vacation, young Simon meets Tania, the sister of one of his classmates. Simon is fascinated with her and tells her about his mother who he has not seen since his parents' divorce two years ago. When he arrives, Simon discovers that his mothers absence is caused by her schizophrenia, which subjects her to sudden nervous attacks and to repeated periods of convalescence in clinics. He returns to college ahead of time after breaking with his father who had hidden the illness from him. Simon tries hard to get used to his daily life again, and is helped by his friendship with a restless classmate who nonchalantly challenges the school's strict rules. An unannounced visit from his mother makes him receive intense revelations about her and witness her in a new nervous attack. He gets more and more involved in her mysterious universe of love and suffering. The sudden news of her death drives him into a desperate state, which he emerges from after a dream brings him peace: his lost mother appears to him. He is apparently reinvigorated and made ready to take on the torturous road of existence.
