Pegiy pyos, Begushchiy kraem morya

The Nivkhs are a northern people, and the heroes of this parable based on the story of the same name by Tchinghiz Aitmatov. Tenyear old Kirisk accompanies his grandfather father and uncle on his first seal hunt, a difficult and dangerous business. Bad luck dogs them. A thick fog lies on the sea, preventing them from getting their bearings. Food and water begin to run low. Eventually, the elders begin, one by one, to commit suicide to save the boy in the interests of the survival of their tribe.

Karen Gevorkjan
Born in Erevan, Armenia, in 1939, Karen Gevorkjan attended advanced courses for camerapersons and directors at VGIK (1963-68). He debuted as a director with Kapa (1969). It was followed by Zdes, na etom perekrestke (1975), which received many notices of appreciation in various festivals, August (1976) and Proscanie za certnoj, banned for years and distributed only in 1990. When he joined the Leningrad studio Armenfilm, he shot a five-part TV series on the Russian physiologist Ivan PavIov and a psychological drama, Znaju tolko ja, whose screenplay was written by Anatolij Grebnev.
