Shanghai has figured in the title of many films to lend them an exotic and mysterious air. The city has long had a reputation as the most wicked city in the world. Fully deserved or not, the city's renown carne in part from it having being a centre of international colonial capitalistic exploitation. In the years before World War II, the English, the French, and the Americans were all there churning out money from shipping, silk, and the everpopular opium, all the while subjugating the Chinese. Leong Pochih's film is set in the Shanghai of those prewar years. Dawson the son of a wealthy American shipper and Fong a streetsmart Chinese gambler meet as boys. A terrifying and murderous encounter involving opium separates the two for years. In 1935 Dawson returns to Shanghai, finds Fong, and the pail begin working together in a shipping business. Soon, Fong is leading the two into the dark realm of the Triads where prostitution, gambling, and drugs are the name of the game.
