9° FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE CINEMA GIOVANI
Special Event - Hong Kong 1985-1991
Sun boon gan bat leung
by Philip Chan
An intelligent comedy set in the newspaper world. "Truth" is a mass-circulation daily on the brink of bankruptcy. The paper has lost ground to papers with no scruples which exploit selfmade "news" and plenty of nudity. The oldfashioned publisher Hui (played by Michael Hui who produced the film) is desperate and sinks to methods as questionable as those of his competitors. Bill, a young reporter and Fly a sensationalist photographer organise the "news" which looks as if it can save his paper: they create a "scoop" about the love life of showbiz star San.
Michael Hui has for years maintained a unique position in comedy production. With this film he wanted to distance himself even more emphatically from traditional Hong Kong comedies based on verbal puns and slapstick. Hui and the director Chan strove for a "natural laugh" from the audience; for a humour which emerges from the development of the characters in the story.
