When Jane Fosset moves into the Lshaped room at the top of a house in Notting Hill Gate, she is pregnant and means to have an abortion, but disgust at the attitude of a gynaecologist whom she visits, decides her to have the baby after all. Ignorant of all this, fellow lodger Toby an unsuccessful writer falls in love with Jane, and she eventually lets him spend the night with her. This angers Toby's friend, the coloured jazzman Johnnie, who, when Jane is at the café where she now works as a waitress, tells Toby that she is pregnant. Toby leaves her and Jane tries to end her pregnancy by swallowing pills. To her own relief, Jane does not lose the baby. When the baby is born, Toby visits Jane in hospital and gives her his latest story, The LShaped Room. Jane decides to go home to France.
