Fierce love, powerful laughter, a growing madness. A man's childhood is revealed through a series of recollections, culminating in an inexplicable murder. The Man and Boy, linked by their fate, tread a common path through a moonlit village and, ever closer to the dark mountain lake, where the murder was committed. Ghosts of a troubled past haunt their journey. Images of angels, rituals of Christianity and the ever present obsession of the Mother. The Boy, burdened with guilt, commits the murder which brings the Man to that same lake shore, seeking atonement. Suicide brings peace and the hope of redemption.

"The film is based upon a Welsh novel of the writer Caradod Prichard which had an immense effect on me when I read it as a teenager in the late fifties. The book is written in the first person, but with a subtle shifting of perspective as the main characters, (the boy and the man he eventually becomes) experience and contemplate the same events. Maintaining their parallel narrative was a key feature of the film structure." (Endaf Emlyn)
