Lisa, a dancer and her choreographer boyfriend Ben, work in a governmentrun dance company. Frustrated by the conservative attitude of the administrators, the couple decides to start their own company. Lisa sells her family jewelry and demands from her uncle money left behind by her late mother while Ben's mother is persuaded to convert an apartment belonging to the family into a studio. Struggling to keep the company going, Ben suffers a breakdown and the couple's relationship takes a toll. They decide to separate. As Lisa's career takes off, Ben falls in love with Lindzay an exdancer who, unlike the strongwilled and ambitious Lisa, just wants to settle down to a family life.

"In all my films, I've used the docudrama format, with a lot of input from the cast. The film is about an artist who breaks down under the enormous pressure attached to his work. He wants to settle down to a 9 to 5 routine, a normal home life. In the end, it doesn't work out that way. Because of the June 4 massacre, he must be an artist, be involved again." (Allen Fong)
