MADE IN CHINATOWN “It’s depressing to have to watch the disinformation the media afflicts
Twenty Chinese living in Milan, including “Miss China in Italy 2007,”
an opera singer, a fashion designer and students at Brera, talk about
their life as immigrants: how they came to Europe, why they chose
Italy, the daily problems they face in the city’s subway, but above all,
their dreams for the future. Stock images mix with family videos and
photo albums, bringing to life familiar stories of immigration in Italy
since the Twenties and demonstrating how short our historical memory
is about one of Europe’s oldest Chinatowns.

approach to the Chinese, as though they were insects unable to
communicate their feelings. On TV, at university conferences, at
municipal round tables all you see are sociologists, anthropologists,
Sinologists explaiing who the Chinese are. The Chinese themselves are
never given the same opportunity to express their hopes, their fears.”
Biography

Sergio Basso
Sergio Basso (Milan, Italy, 1975) received his three-year degree in directing and acting under Jurij Alschitz, at Gitis, the School of Dramatic Art in Moscow. He has a degree in Oriental languages and literature from the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice and he graduated from the Centro sperimentale di cinematografia in Rome. After working in theater with the Teatraz company he moved to China. His films have competed in various festivals, including those in Berlin, San Francisco, Torino, Bellaria, Lille and Poitiers, and have won numerous prizes. His films include Fuhao, 30 febbraio, Quando capita di perdersi, Dora, Il viaggio di Gesù. He his teaching at the Palermo campus of the Centro sperimentale di cinematografia and he his working at his new documentary E adesso torniamo a casa.
