Working as a garbage man, Shigeru, a deafmute boy, finds a broken surfboard beside the road. Interested. he picks it up, fixes it and goes to the sea. The beach is deserted off season except for a group of surfers. Also watching Shigeru with interest and affection, seated on the sand alone, is his girlfriend Takako who is also deafmute. They spend days the same way, the boy surfing and the girl watching him. In their silent world of sea and sand, they are happy. Shigeru's surfboard finally breaks. He goes to a sports shop with Takako, but they cannot afford a new surfboard. He has to wait next payday to buy one. One day the owner of the local surf shop stops by the beach, sees Shigeru practising hard and is impressed by his seriousness. Later he brings an application for a surfing contest and gives it to Shigeru. He enters the contest but he cannot hear his name called and fails to take part in it. After more practising, he enters another contest, competes and wins a trophy. One day, back at the deserted beach, Takako finds his surfboard drifting in the waves...

Kitano Takeshi

Kitano Takeshi was born in Tokyo in 1948. He broke into show business in 1973 with the comedy duo act Two Beat, and went on to become the Japan's most famous actor entertainer. Right now he is literally in every TV drama series or game show. His appearance as Sergeant Hara in Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence brought him to audiences outside Japan. He made his debut feature Warning: This Man is Wild in 1989.
