In December 1986, in AlmaAta. the capital of Kazakhstan. the police and army brutally suppressed a demonstration of students protesting the policies of the central government. By coincidence, 17 yearold Sanjar happened to be in the city's main square during the demonstration. So he is being sought by the secret police. He flees and finally finds refuge with Zina, an old German woman who lives at a remote railway station. Zina herself is an outcast, having been persecuted during the Stalinist purges of 1937. A warm natural friendship develops between Zina and Sanjar.
