Zacharia is a young black tribesman in South Africa. Hunger pushes him to go out in search of fortune. He works a while, in the gold mines and then moves to Johannesburg. He finds a way to run up against all the written and unwritten laws that regulate the relationship between whites and people of colour. He goes from one job Io another domestic servant, mechanic, waiter, and ditch digger and gets kicked out of each because of his ignorance of the white bureaucracy and racist laws. Soon his wife Vinah and his children join him. Vinah manages to get a job as a mid despite the wishes of her husband, who is forbidden from living with her at her employers. Anyway, he comes to visit her one night and is then arrested and imprisoned. On his release, Zacharia finds his wife dead, murdered by a local bandit.
