CROSSING THE BRIDGE
by Mike Binder
Ws the early '70's in Detroit, Michigan. Mort, Tim and Danny are still just "hanging around" three years after their graduation from high school. Tim is an uncontrollable, troubled live-wire prone to first-fighting with his father Danny was the good looking, much-idolized high school football star who lacks the self-confidence to exploit his natural gifts in the real world while Mort, the high school virgin, aspires to become a comedy writer, but shies away from making the commitment to go to college. The three of them are jolted out of their lethargy when another old high school friend approaches them one day with a challenge. He offers the boys $ 9,000 if they will smuggle a shipment of hashish over the border from Canada. Excited by the challenge and the prospect of real money, they decide to take on the adventure. Till they find out they won't be carrying hashish, but heroin, which means life imprisonment if they get caught. When the boys try to back out, the drug dealers threaten to kill them, beat-up Tim and prepare to shoot off his toe as a warning. The boys, now disheartened and afraid, leave with the drugs. Finally, as they are within fifty feet of the border, Mort comes to realize that it's not worth the risk; they leave the car and cross the border on foot, which is Mort's and all of their thresholds to adulthood.
