CROSSING THE RIVER
by Chris Wang
Jeff, a quiet, introspective young man is walking over a bridge one day when he encounters another young man leaning over the bridge and gazing fixedly into the water. Curious, Jeff asks the man what he's staring at. "Fish", the man replies. Unsure of whether or not to take the man seriously, Jeff walks on.
Later that day, Jeff looks from the window of his apartment and notices the man still standing on the bridge and gazing into the water. Still later, while sitting in a nearby diner, Jeff glances toward the bridge to see that the man is gone. In the place the man had been sits a travel bag, which Jeff sees a bum going through. Chasing the bum away, Jeff begins to investigate. He looks through water under the bridge and finds a pair of sunglasses like those the man had been wearing. Fearing that the man has committed suicide, Jeff summons the police. Just before the police arrive, Jeff pulls an address book from the travel bag and hides it in his coat. And so on, through new finds, unsatisfied questions and unsuccessful attempts.
