Two young hippies, Billy and "Captain America", have made a good deal on the sale of a stash of drugs. They decide to leave for New Orleans to see the Mardi Gras. Their trip lasts for days and days. They take it easy, enjoy themselves, eat, and sleep where chance brings them. They pick up another hippie on the road. When he gets to his destination, he puts them up for some time. They go on the road again and are arrested summarily by the police on a trumped up charge. In jail they meet George Hanson, a young lawyer arrested for drunkenness, who manages to get them out of jail the next morning. The lawyer enjoys the two hippies' company so much that he decides to join them. The farther south they get, the more hostile the people are to them, so much so that George dies after having been clubbed by a group of "good thinkers". On their return Billy and Captain America are, in turn, killed by the rifle shots of a man in a pick up truck.
