III A: affettuosamente compagni

School year 197071. A young teacher of Latin and Greek arrives at a dusty, austere high school of the classics in Novara. The transgressive, rebellious, but, in the end, defenseless teacher and her students, especially those of the III A class, go through relationships of understanding, rebellion, and love in the atmosphere of an Italian Dead Poets' Society. A deep relationship begins. She writes them. They write her. There are tender letters, at that time interpreted by the outside world as violently subversive. A year later she publishes a book that contains extracts from these letters titled "To My Prof, With Rage". It becomes a juvenile best seller, but this is the last straw for her, according to her colleagues. Giuliana Cabrini is transferred to Pordenone as a librarian and brought to trial for serious offences.

"'When do you stop being young?' one of the children of that time asks in a letter. And one of her classmates adds: 'Who knows if a low tide will make our islands come together?' I asked these two questions again in an indirect way. I went to look for an answer in the time that separates the children (and us) from that time. I looked for an answer in the ghosts that they have kept, in the distances between them, the distances between what they were and what they want today, between what they decided to be and what they chose to be, between what they would have wanted to be and what they really were. I looked for an answer in the Super8's shot twenty years ago, in the pieces of music that they listened to, in the certainty of a tomorrow which one was able to imagine yesterday and which now contains us without our belonging to it.
