Murray, a smalltime gangster, presents himself directly to the audience. He brags about his highliving life style. Then he presents the people who are around him. There are his wife and an exnurse he met in the jail he was put in, taking the rap for his partner. There is Joe, his partner, whose qualities Murray praises despite the fact that Joe is having an affair with this wife. Last, there is his mother, who stuffs Italian specialties down his throat.

Martin Scorsese (New York, NY, USA, 1942) graduated from New York University in 1964 and debuted in feature films three years later with Who’s That Knocking at My Door? His films include Mean Streets, Taxi Driver (Golden Palm in Cannes in 1976), Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York andThe Departed (Oscar for best director), making him – right from the 1970s – one of the most important American filmmakers.
