The story takes place inside an old room that has only one piece of furniture, a bench tied by a rope to a handle on the door. An old man is sitting on this bench. Over the years this man has forged a place for himself inside society. But now he has gotten old and he knows that sooner or later he has to give up what belongs to him to someone younger than him. This eventuality terrorizes him, and so he tries to maintain his place as long as possible. Outside, someone is trying to open the door, but the pressure of the rope prevents him from doing it. The jerks on the door get stronger and stronger. Suddenly the decisive hit arrives. The bench falls to the floor. The old man is knocked down, and the door opens. A young man comes in who quickly takes his place. The old man abandons the room sadly. The young man closes the door again, pulls the rope and sits on the bench just like the old man, but in his eyes he has more of a spark of ambition.
