THE PROM

Marty Hood experienced a terrible transformation at the age of seven.- for no known reason his skin developed a strange discoloration. Large patches of his body suddenly became pink tattoos. Now seventeen, Marty attends an exclusive eastern boarding school where he is the brightest of the scholarship students. Deeply embarrassed by his body, he hides from his peers and, in various ways, attempts to find a cure for his condition. He tries fluorescent fight treatments, cover-up lotion, even a faith healer, but all fails. Impelled by a desperation for intimate contact, he drifts into a porno shop that advertises "Face to Face Conversation booths". There, behind a two inch plate of glass, he meets Lana, a working class girl slightly older than himself. A relationship slowly develops, and as Marty finds that Lana accepts him as he is, he grows to accept himself. For the first time since his transformation, he reveals his discoloration to another human being, and in so doing breaks thru the bondage of his shame.

Steven Shainberg
Steven Shainberg was born in New York in 1963. He received a BA in English Literature and East Asian Studies from Yale University. After graduation, he worked in a variety of capacities on numerous films, commercials and rock videos: as a production assistant, location manager, assistant director and assistant editor. From 1987 to 1989 he developed several screenplays, including Angels with Denis Johnson and an adaptation of Conrad's novel The Secret Agent. In 1989 he entered The American Film Institute where he directed three short projects.
