The film keys off the life behind barred windows that is the New Yorker's fate. In a tenement the father of a hapless family refuse to let his wife and son leave the building. He lives in fear of all the nuts out on the street. And he is, of course, the nut who lives inside the apartment. After a big fight, the boy takes refuge in his books, and one of them comes to his rescue. In a magical sequence, the boys concentration on his book is so great that he literally wills his room to fall out of the building.
