Two young Californians, the "driver" and the "mechanic" move around the United States in a 1955 Chevrolet with a souped up engine and take part in secret drag races on the highways. In Arizona a young woman joins them. They meet GTO, who takes his name after his car, a Pontiac GTO, and accept his challenge to have a long race with Washington as the finish line. However the two start to lose interest in the challenge pretty soon, They want to go back to their secret drag races. The young girl leaves them for GTO. The driver and the mechanic manage to get her back, but she leaves them again, this time for a motorcyclist. They prepare the Chevrolet for another race in another city.
