Vacas is a story of the conflicting and passionate relationships between two Basque families, Irigibel and Mendiluze, throughout three generations. It's set in a small Guipuzcoan valley where both families live close to each other, only separated by a hillside and a small wood. The proximity of the two houses provokes an outbreak of violence and madness between them. The drama begins in 1875, in a trench during the Second Carlist War, and ends sixty years later, in the summer of 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Vacas consists of four periods or tales, with independent structures but which are interrelated: "The Coward Aizkolari" in 1875, "The Axes" in 1905, "The Lit Hole" in 1915 and "War in the Forest" in 1936.
