Al and Bea are two New York wedding photographers. Bea wants to persuade Al to marry her, but he stalls for time. Besides, Al has to put his mother in a nursing home after she gets evicted from her apartment. Al then spends $1,400 to buy a movie camera to film the feast in Little Italy, Bea resents him for this and scolds him for spending too much money and so causing them to put off their wedding. After the feast, though, she manages to make him fix a date for the wedding. They have an engagement party, interrupted by the news that Al's mother has disappeared. She ran away from the nursing home to look for money for her sons wedding. The day ends with the finding of the mother, the destruction of the movie camera, and an argument between Al and Bea that leads them to break off the engagement. Al will be the one who will try to patch up the relationship, after he has decided that loneliness is his worst fate.
