Barcelona follows the romantic and political misadventures of two American cousins in postFranco Spain. The time is the last decade of the Cold War Ted Boyton is in Barcelona representing a Chicago company and recovering from a failed carnal relationship when his obnoxious cousin Fred arrives, disrupting Ted's living arrangements but greatly improving his social life. They become involved with a group of women who - soulful, beautiful or impertinent - live by a code the cousins never fully comprehend. In the midst of a wave of terrorist incidents directed at Americans, Fred's incautious behavior casts the threat of violence across the cousins' lives.

"Life does have its melodramatic turns, and while melodramatic events might not seem especially interesting in themselves, they could provide another prism to examine the lives of the characters affected. I ended up cutting back the plot, events, and melodrama to just those elements that I knew or felt through my own experience or the experience of others I know well." (Whit Stillman).
