"The last scene is not autobiographical at all. Even if I tried once to kill myself, I am still alive. However, to end the film like that had the advantage of completing the symmetry between the two characters. Since Rue Fontaine is nothing more than a sketch, I had to keep to a very simple form. I constructed the story of René starting from my life with Nico. Or better, I took some excerpts: the slap, the separation, and also Génie's 'symmetrical' monologue that story of the dead boy child, adapted from an episode from Jean's life... Génie's dead girl child, like Elli's little boy in L'enfant secret, represents a piece of past fife. When people form a couple, there are two stories that meet. Inevitably, the past weighs upon the present." (Interview by Thomas Lescure, in Une caméra ` la place du coeur, Editions AdmirandaInstitut de l'Image, AixenProvence 1992).
