Peter and Catherine Witner are a wealthy and privileged L.A. couple who have everything... except stability in their marriage. Exhausted by the effort of remaining on the cutting edge of sophistication, Katherine becomes bitter over Peter's repeated infidelities and Peter feels frustrated by the brittle relationship he shares with his wife. The crumbling of their relationship accelerates after they both lose their jobs. Forced to find a means to support themselves, and unwilling to face the economic reality of their situation, Peter and Katherine open a trendy and shockingly expensive boutique. With it, the hope to sustain themselves and, eventually, to raise enough money to pay for their divorce. At the same time, they each seek solace and comfort in new romances, sexual adventures and, above all, spiritual enlightenment. For this is the New Age in America in Los Angeles and in the world of interpersonal relationship. And the new is always better than the old... or is it?

Michael Tolkin

Michael Tolkin was born in New York. His screenplay The Player (adapted from his novel) was filmed to great acclaim by Robert Altman. Tolkin has been honoured with an Academy Award nomination, a Writers Guild award, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award. His first produced screenplay was for Gleaming the Cube, starring Christian Slater. He made his directorial debut with his original screenplay The Rapture. The New Age is his second feature film.
