Trouble is brewing for Mr. Chu, the greatest living chef of Taipei, and the father of three grown and rebellious daughters. Ws been years since Mr. Chu's wife died, leaving him to raise Jia-Jen, an old maid school teacher seemingly devoted to her father, Jia-Khien, a driven executive who can barely stand her fathers company and Jia-Ning, the youngest and most hopelessly romantic of the lot. Enters old Mrs Liang, the nagging widow who's just moved next door, and suddenly the whole clan is wondering if Mr. Chu will soon be cooking for someone new…

"Sex is perhaps the greatest form of communication but it is also enclosed in many ways in its own world, closed off from the normal world of family conversation. And when families can't communicate, they resort ritual, with the ritual of eating - food preparation, table talk, cleaning up, discussion about food - the most privileged daily ritual of all. The film is about how ritual can bring people together while also disguising how far apart they really can become." (Ang Lee).
