Retrospective - The Birth of The Cinema In Africa
BADOU BOY
by Djibril Diop Mambéty
Country: Senegal
Year: 1970
Duration: 60'
Badou Boy, a cheeky and irreverent lad, roves the streets of Dakar on public transport. A chubby and infuriated gendarme of the "black dragons" (the police) chases him. A chronicle of life in the city's popular neighbourhoods.
"This film was not very successful with the public, because the language and form that I chose were not very popular. Besides, a choice has to be made between research and mere observation. I think that the cinema has to go much further than observation. I think that it is up to us, as African filmmakers, to reinvent the cinema" (D. Diop Mambéty).
