The amorous adventures of Karim, a young Senegalese, divided between the duties of traditional society and the temptations of the West. In his town, Saint Louis, Karim begins officially courting Marème, the woman he wants to marry. The family puts forth continual economic requests to assess his generosity and his wealth. When the wedding is almost agreed, the fiancée is taken away from him by an affluent cousin who wins the favours of the family. Disappointed and bitter, Karim moves to Dakar. It is Aminata's turn now. She is divorced and, with the help of her lover, tries to trick Karim. After escaping this danger, Karim meets a Catholic girl of the isle of Gorée. They meet on several occasions but the religious differences (Karim is a Muslim) prevails over love. In the meantime, the cousin, who has turned out to be a bad lot, leaves Marème. Karim goes back to Saint Louis and his bachelor days will finally be over.
