Texas preacher Euliss "Sonny" Dewey finds his world falling apart when he discovers that his wife Jessie is cheating on him. As fiery-tempered as he is jealous, Sony severely wounds his rival and then flees. Realizing the gravity of his actions, he leaves his wife and children and starts a new life in a small town in Louisiana. Here he makes friends with an elderly preacher, the Reverend Blackwell, and convinces him to form a new congregation, the Church of the One Path to Paradise. He soon becomes known as "the Apostle". His religious zeal, the success of his sermons and an encounter with a woman give him a new serenity. But in the meantime, the man he wounded has died and the time has come for the Apostle to settle his debts with human justice.
