TOUKI-BOUKI (LE VOYAGE DE LA HYÈNE)

Touki-bouki (the journey of the hyaena)
by Djibril Diop Mambéty
Country: Senegal
Year: 1973
Duration: 110'

Mory has taken his herd to the slaughter-house and is wandering around the city on an old motorbike. Anta is a student at the university and is completely at odds with the image of the traditional woman. They both dream of going to France. The destination is Paris, "a little angel of Paradise". Looking for the money to be able to leave is an opportunity to show a spiritual and metaphorical journey, the deep laceration of Africa's youth, divided between their attachment to their land and the strong attraction of the West. Anta will leave, whilst Mory's journey will only go as far as the harbour in Dakar.

"I think that our duty is to attack the public. If we want to change something, we have to upset audiences, make them feel uncomfortable without hoping to obtain tangible results immediately" (D. Diop Mambéty).
