UNE NATION EST NÉE

A NATION IS BORN
by Paulin Soumanou Vieyra
Country: Senegal
Year: 1961
Duration: 20'

With the rhetorical tones of a propagandistic documentary, Vieyra celebrates the history of Senegal up to the birth of the Republic. "Once, there lived a people in this country that liked to do things well...", narrates the voice off accompanying the film. The images of the pre-colonial period are idyllic, the population dance endlessly in the forests, on the seashore and in the savannah. "But one day the Europeans arrived and fought each other to dominate the country." From colonialism to freedom, the battle is not over yet and the country is slowly taking shape.
