Every week millions of people are set in motion in order to go to the games. There are the people who play. There are the people who make themselves comfortable in the stands rooting for their teams. In the end some have won and the others have not. This happens to everybody in the major-league soccer championship. Meanwhile, the referee - almost always alone — travels to the stadium. He has to arrive on time, at least an hour before the beginning of the game, because the teams cannot play without a referee. Whoever that person is, whatever job he has in life, once he puts on his uniform, he becomes just "the referee" for everybody. He will go on field knowing that everyone there will agree on one thing only: that he is wrong.

"There is one job - among all the possible jobs that exist - that allows for no salvation. There is a job that requires a moral rigor and an ability for toleration like that of a saint and a psychophysical preparation worthy of an Olympic champion. This is a job that is chosen in complete freedom. At what age and for what reason does one decide to become a referee?" (Stefano Mordini).
