GENERAZIONI D'AMORE - LE QUATTRO AMERICHE DI FERNANDA

LOVE GENERATIONS - THE FOUR AMERICAS OF FERNANDA PIVANO

Country: Italy
Year: 2001
Duration: 50'

This is a portrait of Fernanda Pivano that starts off from her Victorian childhood and goes on to look for the impulse that led her to introduce four generations of provocative American writers to Italy - from the Spoon River Anthology to the works of Jay Mac Inerney. There are several friends who back her up during the interview. There is Teto, her neighbor's psychoanalyst-parrot, and Lorenzo, a twenty-year-old interested in the protagonists of American counterculture. This film also presents historical sequences with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso as well as never-before-seen photographs of Ettore Sottsass Jr. from the Pivano Library of the Benetton Foundation.

"I have known Nanda since 1973 and not one day has passed since then when I have not seen her, argued with her, or called her on the phone. This might be the reason why it took me more than a year to reduce a thirty-hour interview into a fifty-minute film. It was shot in the summer of 2000 in and outside of that building in Trastevere that Fernanda Pivano describes in the novel, La mia Kasbah" (Ottavio Rosati).
