Enid and Rebecca are two friends who have just graduated from high school and have to decide what to do with their lives. Enid would like to leave home: she is tired of her father and his fiancée Maxine. Rebecca is less restless but just as undecided as to her future. During the summer, the two friends are inseparable and spend a lot of time running after Josh, who is their age, but he doesn't seem very interested in them. Enid meets Seymour, who collects records and is much older then her. The two become friends, even though Rebecca is against it.

"Enid is an outsider. She can't adapt to the world around her, she is trying to make a place for herself in a country that is rapidly becoming a theme park for consumers, a sort of monoculture without anything authentic left in it" (Terry Zwigoff).
