Hedwig, an aspiring rock star, was born male and named Hansel. He spent his childhood in East Germany, with one ear listening to American radio stations and the other listening to his mother who told him Plato's myth about the origin of love. Luther, an American soldier, falls in love with Hansel and wants to marry him and take him back to America, but on the condition that Hansel has a sex change. Some time later, Hedwig is living in Kansas, but is soon abandoned by Luther. Towards the end of the 1980's, Hedwig forms a rock band. One day, she meets Tommy, an aspiring singer and falls in love with him. But their love story will soon become complicated.

John Cameron Mitchell
John Cameron Mitchell was born in 1963 in El Paso, Texas. He began his artistic career as a theatrical actor, and won many prizes and nominations for Broadway shows. He has also worked for various off-Broadway productions and founded the New York Drama Department. He has acted in various full-length films and television series. Along with composer and lyricist Stephen Trask, he wrote the show Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which debuted at the Squeezebox, a transvestite club in New York. The show's extraordinary success lead him to take the musical to larger theaters, and won the OBIE prize, and prizes by New York Magazine, the Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle. Killer Films proposed he make a cinematographic adaptation of the musical, which went on to win recognition at the Sundance Film Festival, and the Festivals in Berlin, Deauville, San Francisco and Seattle.
