Annamaria, a prostitute from Milan, has gone on vacation in Liguria with her daughter Caterina. In order to escape gossip, from the tourists in general and the women tourists in particular, she pretends to be a widow. Her reserve and her honesty are admired by all, including the communist mayor of the town. One day Luigi, an old client of Annamaria's, arrives at the hotel. She refuses to see him and he decides to tell the town the truth.

Alberto Lattuada

Alberto Lattuada (Milan, 1914) the son of a well-known composer, studied architecture and is an art and movie critic. During the 1940's he founded the Cineteca Italiana di Milano with Gianni Comencini and Mario Ferrari. He worked as a screenwriter on Piccolo mondo antico (1941) by Mario Soldati and Sissignora (1941) by Ferdinando Maria Poggioli. He debuted as a director with Giacomo l'idealista (1942), followed by La freccia nel fianco (1945). He made some of the most important post-war films with Lux, including Il bandito (1946) and Il mulino del Po (1949). In 1951 he directed Luci del varietà with Federico Fellini. La spiaggia belongs to one of Lattuada's favorite genres, period satire.
