In 1952 Age and Scarpelli began their partnership on writing subjects that made them become protagonists of Italian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s. They worked with more and more interesting results. Their work with Mario Monicelli was particularly memorable, among others, Brancaleone alle crociate, Romanzo popolare and Vogliamo i colonnelli. However, the pair also offered well-made and functional scripts to Dino Risi (particularly, In nome del popolo italiano) and to Ettore Scola. With Scola they made their first important works that merited them several Silver Ribbon awards, from C'eravamo tanto amati to La terrazza. Their works include the titles that have marked an era of successes for Italian cinema, such as Germi's, Seduced and Abandoned and Signore e signori.
"These were the films that I saw when I was a kid and that I did not yet know how to love. They told me about people who very, very similar to many people that I knew. In those films Gassman, Tognazzi, Sordi, Mastroianni, Manfredi, Vitti, and Sandrelli seemed to be putting on the clothes of certain of my relatives, acquaintances, or neighbors. Who were these people, Age & Scarpelli, who made film books, screenplays, and dialogues? Who were these two with the logo that - who knows? - makes me think of the little vaudeville bands and trinkets? Really, I had never asked this question until I ran into those two in person" (Paolo Virzì).

Paolo Virzì
Paolo Virzì (Livorno, 1964) has been interested in theater, politics, and romance literature. He quit the university in 1986 to enroll in the Experimental Film Center, where he earned a diploma in screenwriting in 1987. He then worked on the drafting of numerous scripts for film and television before he could convince himself to establish himself as a director.
