In a small, rural town in France, a family composed of husband, wife and son are about to eat lunch. But they realize that there is no more bread. The father goes out to buy some, but time passes and he doesn't come home. So the mother, then, decides to go out.

"This death, which I refer to in the screenplay, reminds me of my childhood in Palestine. It was a childhood devastated by the sudden death of our loved ones. Nobody at the time, not even my mother, who was very close to me, could help me understand and accept these deaths as an integral part of my life" (Hiam Abbass).
