Charles S. Chaplin
(London, 1889-Corsier-sur-Vevey, Switzerland, 1977) is probably the greatest celebrity in film history. A comic actor, director, screenwriter, and producer (he was one of the founders of United Artists), he entered the collective imagination with his character the Tramp, with his small moustache, derby, and walking stick, poor, unemployed, desperate but also zany, happily anarchic, cynical through desperation, loving by nature. Starting in the 1910s, Chaplin directed countless shorts and then moved on to directing feature films, beginning with The Kid (1921). He received honorary Oscars in 1929 and 1972.
