19° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL
Tribute to Shadi Abdu Al Salam
Mustafa aw al saher al saghir
by Mahmud Khalil Rashed
Mostapha goes to India with his father. He learns the mysteries of magic in the Himalayas. When he returns to Egypt, he meets Bahlul, an alcoholic. Mostapha tries to convince Bahlul to stop drinking, but Bahlil continues undeterred, until he goes crazy. In the end Mostapha manages to cure him.
"Despite the fact that Mustafa wa al saher al saghir is an amateur film, like those of Mohammad Baiyyumi, it was the first Egyptian production to use "cinematographic tricks". In 1992, the Union of Arab Artists in Cairo funded the restoration of the only remaining copy, producing a new 35mm negative."
