Un giorno, meno di quindici anni fa, abbiamo visto a Roma, per caso, una proiezione all'aperto di due film, erano La Marseillaise di Renoir, che è un film magnifico, e Orphans of the Storm, di Griffith, film che conoscevo malissimo, lo avevo visto una sola volta. Ebbene, quella sera ci siamo detti all'improvviso che politicamente forse il Griffith è più forte del Renoir. Dunque la forza di un film politico non ha niente a che vedere con la sua ideologia. Dopo abbiamo avuto l'occasione di vedere Orphans of the Storm alla Cinémathèque - era una proiezione più o meno irritante perché era la copia del MoMA con i colori, ecc. (anche se poteva forse contenere delle cose che non avevamo mai visto prima...) - ma non abbiamo provato di nuovo questa impressione, vi abbiamo visto piuttosto il suo lato sadiano, infine! il suo lato cinema. Ma non credo che ci fossimo sbagliati vedendolo quindici anni prima, vedendo il film subito dopo il Renoir. Evidentemente c'era un film opprimente e un altro ottimista. Bisognerebbe partire di lì per capire che cosa si può fare.

D.W. Griffith
D.W. Griffith (LaGrange, KY, USA, 1875 - Hollywood, CA, USA, 1948) is considered one of the founding fathers of American film and the classic cinematographic language. His primary merit is for having adopted and codified a number of linguistic and technical innovations (such as point of view shots, axial cuts, dollies, pan shots, close-ups), for having theorized and popularized editing as a narrative instrument, and for having transformed feature film in the usual format. Some of the most important movies he directed (out of a total of five hundred) are Birth of a Nation (1914), an epic and controversial fresco about the Civil War and a box office success; Intolerance (1916), with which he tried to respond to critics of his previous film but was a financial failure; and the Dickensian parabola Broken Blossom (1919). He founded United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, and in 1936 he received an honorary Oscar.
